OXYTRON 015XDII:
oxide bonded silicon carbide with a continuous SiC phase

The latest Blasch oxide bonded silicon carbide, for nonferrous metal handling and wear parts that need more erosion resistance.

The non wetting behavior of an oxide bonded grade, with silicon carbide running through the whole part.
Made for parts that see molten metal and erosion.

In short

OXYTRON 015XDII is the latest generation of Blasch oxide bonded silicon carbide, introduced in 2020. Its microstructure contains a continuous, dendritic silicon carbide phase throughout the part, which raises erosion resistance (1.8 cc loss in the ASTM C704 test) while keeping thermal shock resistance and the non wetting behavior in molten aluminum. It is used for nonferrous metal handling, such as auto ladles, heater tubes, nozzles, launders and degassing parts, and for wear parts such as micronizer liners.

What makes 015XDII different

In a standard oxide bonded silicon carbide, the SiC grains sit as separate islands in the oxide bond. Wear attacks the bond between them first, and grains break out.

In OXYTRON 015XDII, the microstructure is engineered so that the silicon carbide forms a continuous, branching network through the whole part. Abrasive particles meet silicon carbide wherever they hit, not the softer bond. That is where the higher erosion resistance comes from, without giving up the thermal shock and corrosion resistance of the oxide bond.

Like every Blasch grade, 015XDII is cast net shape, so the same material can be made into thin walled tubes, ladles and complex wear parts. How the Blasch process works

OXYTRON 015XDII key properties

Values from the Blasch OXYTRON 015XDII product information sheet.

Property OXYTRON 015XDII
Composition 64% SiC, 27% Al2O3, 3.4% SiO2
Apparent porosity 14.5%
Modulus of rupture, room temperature 6,261 psi
Bulk density 176.7 lb/ft³
Erosion, ASTM C704 1.8 cc loss

Besides erosion resistance, the data sheet lists high dimensional tolerance, thermal shock and oxidation resistance, a smoother surface than cast iron, and complete non wetting to aluminum with no surface treatment required.

Silicon carbide all the way through

When the hard phase runs through the whole part, there is no soft path for the wear to follow, and the part keeps its shape and surface longer.

Where 015XDII is used

Molten aluminum and nonferrous metals: auto ladles, immersion heater tubes, launders, tundishes, nozzles, stopper rods and degassing parts. Non wetting surfaces mean longer run times, less scrap and cleaner metal, with less maintenance.

Low pressure die casting: riser tubes, where a non wetting, erosion resistant tube keeps its bore over the campaign. 015XDII riser tube case study

Wear: micronizer liners and nozzles that grind or carry abrasive powders, where the continuous SiC phase pays off.

When the standard grade is enough

Where erosion is low and the job is mainly non wetting contact with aluminum, the standard OXYTRON grade is the economical choice. Where erosion dominates and molten metal plays no role, ALTRON alumina bonded silicon carbide or a reaction bonded grade wear less.

Frequently asked

Questions about OXYTRON 015XDII

Is 015XDII a silicon carbide?

Yes. It is an oxide bonded silicon carbide with 64% SiC, in which the silicon carbide forms a continuous phase through the part.

Does it need a coating in molten aluminum?

No. Like standard OXYTRON, it is completely non wetting to aluminum without any surface treatment.

How does it compare to standard OXYTRON?

It adds erosion resistance through the continuous SiC phase, with a measured ASTM C704 loss of 1.8 cc, while keeping thermal shock and corrosion resistance.

Since when is 015XDII available?

Blasch introduced OXYTRON 015XDII in August 2020 as the next generation of its oxide bonded silicon carbide.
