Power plant wear parts
for coal, ash and biomass

Ceramic nozzles, lined elbows, inserts and dust collector parts where ash and fuel wear through steel.

Coal, ash, sorbent and biomass wear through steel faster than any outage plan.
Cast ceramic parts that move the replacement to the next planned stop.

In short

The power plant wear parts that cut erosion most are the ones in the fuel and ash path: coal nozzles and burner parts, pipe elbows in pneumatic ash and fuel lines, fluidized bed nozzles, air heater tube inserts and FGD spray nozzles. Blasch casts these parts in silicon carbide or dense alumina and fits them into the existing equipment, either as a full replacement for a steel component or as a liner inside a steel body. In ash conveying at a bagasse fired plant, a ceramic lined elbow showed about 10% wear after 30 months, where steel elbows had lasted 3 to 4 months.

Steel parts, patched again

Most plants replace a worn steel elbow or nozzle with the same design. The part comes back, and so does the next unplanned stop.

Long radius ceramic lined bend with flange

Typical today

  • Steel or cast iron elbows replaced every few months in ash lines
  • Tile linings held by epoxy that erode at the joints
  • Machined ceramic parts limited to simple shapes
  • Hardfacing and weld overlay renewed at every outage

Engineered with Blasch

  • One piece cast liners with a smooth bore and constant wall
  • Silicon carbide grades chosen for particle size, velocity and temperature
  • Precast shapes with flanges, threads and tapers cast in
  • Drop-in parts that fit the existing equipment

Fuel preparation and firing

Pulverized coal erodes everything between the mill and the burner. Blasch makes coal nozzles and nozzle tips, splitter plates, coal nozzle linings, fuel heads and lined pipe for coal transfer.

Fluidized bed boilers use CFB and BFB nozzles, bubble caps and tuyeres, welded or bolted in, designed to resist plugging and to be walked on.

Burner and mixer tubes, fan linings and mill discharge valves come from the same grades when the shape is too complex to machine.

Where the outage starts

In a power plant, the part that wears fastest is rarely the most expensive one, but it decides when the unit comes down.

Ash handling, air heaters and FGD

Fly ash and bottom ash lines, trona and sorbent injection and pet coke feed all wear through bends first. CeraLine lined pipe puts a one piece cast ceramic sleeve inside a steel body, with ANSI flanges or the end connection your line uses.

Air heater inserts protect the inlet of each tube in air preheaters burning abrasive fuel. They come for all nominal boiler tube sizes, up to 3 ft long, with walls from 1/16 in.

FGD spray nozzles and SiClone dust collector components complete the flue gas side, with multicyclone outlets, inlets and spin vanes at about one third the weight of steel.

Results from power plants

A plant in Central America firing coal and bagasse conveys ash pneumatically at 60 to 70 °C. Steel elbows lasted 3 to 4 months. The CeraLine elbow installed in March 2023 had lost about 2 mm of its 20.7 mm liner at the most worn point after 30 months, with the bore unchanged. CeraLine in bagasse ash conveying

Applications in power generation

Coal fired boilers, pulverized coal piping, coal mills and pulverizers, circulating fluidized bed boilers, biomass and bagasse boilers, FGD scrubbers, fly ash and bottom ash handling, air preheaters, and trona and sorbent injection.

Many of the same parts work in mining and mineral processing, where slurry wears pipe the way ash does, and in cement and pet coke handling under heavy industrial processing.

Frequently asked

Questions about power plant wear parts

Is a ceramic lined elbow the same as a coated elbow?

No. A coating is a thin layer applied to steel. A Blasch liner is a cast ceramic sleeve with its own wall thickness, from 1/4 in to 6 in, fixed inside the steel body.

Will a lined elbow keep my pipe diameter?

It can. When the bore must stay the same, the steel body is made larger and connected with a special flange or reducer, without a step in the bore.

Which ceramic is used for ash and coal wear?

Mostly silicon carbide grades such as ALTRON, NITRON or reaction bonded InVinCer, or dense alumina. The choice depends on particle size, velocity and temperature.

Do I need a drawing for a replacement part?

No. Dimensions of the existing part and the operating conditions are enough for a Blasch engineer to design the replacement.

Which part brings
your unit down first?

Send the location, the medium and how often the part fails today. A Blasch engineer answers with a grade and a design.
