Sample cups for molten metal:
chemistry and gas sample in one dip

A threaded high alumina cup that takes a master sample and a pin sample at once, without machining.

One cup, two samples,
and no machining before the lab can start work.

Ceramic sample cups for molten metal
In short

Sample cups that survive molten metal sampling are made of a thermal shock resistant, erosion resistant ceramic, so the cup neither cracks on immersion nor gives material to the sample. The Blasch sample cup is a single piece of fired high alumina ceramic that takes a 1-3/8 in master sample for chemical analysis and a 1/4 in pin sample for gas analysis in one dip. A 1/2 in NPT tapered thread screws it onto a length of steel pipe as the handle.

How the sample cup works

Side fill master sample: metal enters from the side into a chamber 5 in deep. Dross and impurities rise to the top before the sample solidifies, so the bottom section can be sliced off as a clean sample for chemical analysis.

Bottom fill pin sample: a separate 1/4 in chamber fills from below. Metal from under the surface gives a cleaner sample for gas analysis.

Threaded connection: the cup threads onto ordinary steel pipe, so the handle stays and only the cup is replaced.

A representative sample

A sample is only worth its analysis if the cup added nothing to it and took nothing away, which is why the cup is made from the same kind of ceramic as the crucible.

What changes in the lab

Consistent cups give consistent samples, and that shortens the path from furnace to result.

Same size every time

Each cup is cast to the same dimensions, so every sample fits the same preparation and test setup.

Less machining

Both samples come out at their final diameter, which removes steps before analysis.

Representative metal

Resistance to erosion and attack by the melt keeps ceramic out of the sample.

Where sample cups are used

In induction melting of superalloys and specialty steels, where chemistry is checked before the pour and gas content matters for the finished part. The cup is part of the same range as ProCaster high alumina crucibles and the InterLok segmented lining.

Frequently asked

Questions about sample cups

What does the master sample measure, and what the pin sample?

The master sample, 1-3/8 in in diameter, is used for chemical analysis. The pin sample, 1/4 in in diameter, is used for gas analysis.

How is the cup attached to the handle?

With a 1/2 in NPT tapered thread that screws onto a length of steel pipe.

Can the cup be made in other sizes?

Blasch casts ceramic shapes to customer dimensions. Tell us the sample sizes your lab works with, and an engineer checks what can be cast.

Samples that do not match
the melt?

Tell us the alloy, the sampling method and the sample sizes your lab needs. A Blasch engineer answers with a cup design.
