ALRAM backup ram:
the backup lining behind an alumina crucible

Ultra high alumina ramming mixes that pack tight, stay loose and expand with the crucible.

The crucible gets the attention.
The ram behind it decides whether the crucible can do its job.

In short

Behind an alumina crucible goes an ultra high alumina backup ram that expands at the same rate as the crucible and does not sinter into a rigid shell. ALRAM 3030, with 99.7% Al2O3, is designed for monolithic crucibles from 5 to 1,000 lb, and ALRAM 4041, with 99.8% Al2O3, for high performance linings such as the InterLok segmented lining and ProCaster 087 crucibles. Both are rated to 3,200 °F and pack tight with an engineered particle size distribution.

What the backup lining does

In a coreless induction furnace, the backup lining fills the space between the crucible and the coil grout. It supports the crucible, holds it in place and insulates the coil.

If the backup sinters into a hard shell, it cracks together with the crucible and has to be chiselled out at every reline. If it expands differently from the crucible, gaps and stresses open with each heat. A non-sintering, tight packing ram of the same chemistry as the crucible avoids both.

Moving together

A crucible and its backup ram that expand at the same rate stay in contact through every heat, so thermal shock is shared instead of concentrated at one wall.

ALRAM is supplied in 55 lb bags, with custom packaging on request.

Compared with a magnesia backup, the ultra high alumina ram insulates better and keeps more heat in the melt.

The complete lining package

ALRAM is one of four parts that make up a Blasch induction furnace lining.

Crucible

A ProCaster crucible in the grade for your alloy, from 5 to 4,500 lb.

High alumina crucibles

Backup ram

ALRAM 3030 or 4041, matched to the crucible or segmented lining.

Top cap

A phosphate bonded high alumina plastic refractory that closes the top and forms the spout.

Slip plane

A mica sheet or woven cloth between ram and coil grout that protects the grout.

For which furnaces

ALRAM goes into coreless induction furnaces melting superalloys, steel, stainless, iron and non-ferrous metals, in air or under vacuum. For large furnaces with a segmented InterLok lining, ALRAM 4041 is the matching backup.

Channel induction furnaces use a different system, with a fired ceramic channel in the inductor. CeraLoop channel furnace linings

Frequently asked

Questions about backup ram

What is the difference between ALRAM 3030 and 4041?

ALRAM 3030 is designed for monolithic crucibles from 5 to 1,000 lb. ALRAM 4041 has a different particle packing and suits high performance linings such as InterLok and ProCaster 087.

Can I use ALRAM behind a crucible from another supplier?

ALRAM 3030 works with monolithic alumina crucibles in general. Its expansion is matched to ProCaster, so that pairing gives the best thermal shock behavior.

Why not use a magnesia backup?

An ultra high alumina ram expands like an alumina crucible and insulates better than magnesia, which keeps more heat in the furnace.
