From hydrogen production to sulphur recovery:
let ceramics pave the way

A webinar with DigitalRefining on ceramic systems for the reformer and the Claus furnace.

One webinar, two furnaces at opposite ends of the refinery.

In short

In this webinar, presented with DigitalRefining.com, Uday Parekh of Blasch explains how two engineered ceramic systems raise reliability in hydrogen and sulfur recovery plants. StaBlox replaces brick flue gas tunnels in top-fired steam methane reformers, and VectorWall replaces brick checkerwalls and choke rings in Claus reaction furnaces.

Why the two units belong together

Refineries make hydrogen in the reformer for their hydrotreaters. The hydrotreaters produce sour gas, and the hydrogen sulfide from it is converted to sulfur in the Claus unit. Both furnaces depend on refractory structures inside them: the reformer on its floor tunnels, the Claus furnace on the wall or ring that mixes the gas before the waste heat boiler.

Same failure, two furnaces

In both furnaces, mortared brick is asked to move with the heat, and in both the answer is blocks that move on their own.

Where to go next

The reformer side is covered on the StaBlox flue gas tunnel system page, the Claus side on the VectorWall mixing checkerwall page. The 2018 article by the same author summarizes the field and CFD results for both units.
