Case study

Ceramic lined elbows and spools
in lithium battery production

A Midwest battery maker stopped replacing stainless steel conveying parts every few months.

The conveyed material attacked stainless steel from the inside.
The answer was a dense ceramic bore in a stainless shell

In short

A lithium battery manufacturer in the US Midwest replaced stainless steel pipes and elbows that failed every few months with CeraLine elbows and spools lined with InVinCer reaction bonded silicon carbide. The ceramic lined parts, set in custom 304 stainless steel bodies with custom flanges, lasted more than one year, even in the most aggressive sections of the conveying system.

A conveying line that ate its own pipe

The plant transports highly corrosive materials for battery formulations through its production process. Stainless steel pipes and elbows in that line failed and had to be replaced every few months.

Each replacement cost parts and labor and interrupted the production schedule. Elbows, where the flow turns and hits the wall, were the weakest points.

What the material needed

Stainless steel lost here because the conveyed material attacked it chemically, so the fix was a bore the material cannot react with, not a harder metal.

How Blasch worked out the solution

Blasch's material engineers analyzed the existing system and the failed parts to find the cause of the failures before choosing a material. The result was a smooth bore, fully dense ceramic liner to keep chemical attack to a minimum.

What was installed

  • CeraLine elbows and spools with a one piece liner of InVinCer RB, reaction bonded silicon carbide
  • Bodies in 304 stainless steel, made to fit the existing line
  • Custom flanges so the lined parts bolt into the system without changes elsewhere

Questions about this case

Is CeraLine a coating on the steel?

No. CeraLine is a cast ceramic liner, one piece per part, set into a steel body. Nothing is sprayed or coated onto the steel.

Why reaction bonded silicon carbide?

The plant needed a dense material that resists chemical attack from the conveyed product. InVinCer RB is fully dense and was chosen for that load.

Did the line need to be redesigned?

No. The lined parts were built in 304 stainless steel with custom flanges to fit the existing line.
